Meeting the Pain of the Clerical Abuse Scandal with Faith

October 14, 2018

Almost 30 parishioners joined together last Sunday evening for “Why I’ll Stay Catholic” to discuss meeting the pain of the       clerical abuse scandal with faith.  Participants shared scripture and made a plan to pray, fast, get involved, or study to strengthen themselves and neighbors in faith.

The Catechesis and Education Commission thanks Tom Osborne, Liz Rhodenbaugh and Jeffrey Zalar for sharing their personal testimony on “Why I’ll Stay Catholic.”  Also, thank you
to table leaders: Bill Scoville, Matt Gockerman, Rich Biegner, & Ashley Gabriel.

Here are some of the Scripture readings , comments, and  strategies shared at this meeting…

  • “Concern over good ol’ boys club mentality
  • “Stronger penalties for abusing doctrine”
  • “Concern over financial impact”
  • John 6:66-68 – “After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”
  • Jeremiah 17:7-8 – “Blessed are those who trust in the LORD; the LORD will be their trusted.  They are like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It does not fear heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still produces fruit.”
  • “Church is Christ’s gift”
  • “Peter was the rock upon which the Church was built – get back to early church structure”
